The Virtual Evolution: Episode One

I was fascinated by episode one of the Virtual Revolution and the discussion on how the internet was "made," but my favorite part was the section on Wikipedia. Einar Kvaran was one of the main contributors to Wikipedia. With Wikipedia always being brought up in classrooms around the country I found this part especially appealing.

Wikipedia in general is an interesting concept because people can edit what other people write. There is no way to tell if what you are reading is actually true. As the video stated as well, "anyone can write on this site with no qualifications and it is anonymous as well,"which is  what the argument is for teachers when, the idea of students using Wikipedia as a source is brought up in a classroom.

Wikipedia is also a monumental website because it "under cuts authority" meaning that people can write what they want and when they want. Although now the government has required Wikipedia to put regulations on what people can write. It is interesting that a site that which was originally created for people to write and debate on different topics, has now been given rules for the people who belong to that page. This clearly shows that the government is limiting the "freedom of the internet" more and more.
