Animation Blog #2 What is Caricature? What is more true caricature or realism?

Ch 2 Caricature
Blog 2 (Understanding) STYLE

Based on discussion, our viewing and chapter two (recall), what is caricature? What is more true, caricature or realism? Explain your reasons why to your audience.

A caricature is a way of animation that is over exaggerated in a certain way, either facial or by a character trait. One example could be the way the character moves, or the certain way the character moves their eyebrows.

According to the Illusion Of Life, as Wilfred Jackson stated, “Walt wanted his drawings that were animated to seem to be real things that had feelings and emotions and thoughts, and the main thing was that the audience would believe them and they would care what happened to them, Walt Disney also recognized the value of personality animation and he stressed it in story development”, with this being stressed realism is more than true than caricature. With the use of realism, the animator was able to express emotion, in many different ways as an example originally for the animators when drawing Mickey’s arm, originally the arm had to encircle the large object, and it then was stretched until it was long enough to do the job.   Another example, of emotion being expressed is the use of smoothness and drawing of the lines. Instead of staccato action which was originally used, the idea of pleasing smoothness was proposed and a new way of animation was born.

Take the film, The Incredibles as an example of the use of realism. Take note that not every Disney character will look exactly like a "human", animations have to look interesting and have to catch the viewers eye as well. Caricature's over exaggerate things, where as realism shows charcter's from a more approachable realistic look. Even though (picture below) the Parr family are superheroes they look like your average, excluding the small waist size for the mother and daughter. This is why people enjoy Disney films because they make characters that look like everyday people.
